I saw a sculpture of Our Lady by Joan Flotats in the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. Then in prayer the scene expanded to a mystical version of the Annunciation where the Holy Spirit came in a halo that pierced and penetrated the halo of Mary forming a third halo. She receives the unborn Christ beneath a dogwood tree. The legend of the dogwood is that this once tall and strong tree was used to form the cross on which Jesus died, and so now it grows small, and each blossom bears on its pure white petals the four wounds from hands and feet that Jesus bore for us. Mary holds one of these petals in the image, while a field of wheat beneath her foreshadows the Eucharist that He will gift to us. — Bill Donaghy
